Play In The Margins Press is an independent publishing and event production initiative Raphael Cohen launched in 2007 with the release of his first full-length poetry collection, Scrutinizing Lines.
Dedicated to promoting the work of Bay area writers and performers bridging the worlds of art and activism, Play In The Margins Press has partnered with Connecting Arts to produce Eastlake Sessions, a seasonal arts mash-up of literary, musical, and film mediums, with a particular focus on projects that highlight, support, and inspire social justice efforts.
Play In The Margins Press has featured the literary talents of Oakland-based writers and performers Ariel Luckey, Aimee Suzara, Oscar Bermeo, Carolynn Norr, and DeWayne Dickerson, the audio catering of DJ Diet, as well as the time-lapse photography installations of D.G. Gonzalez, resident visuals coordinator.
Currently seeking funding to support its long-term aim of publishing multiple chapbooks a year by emerging Bay area writers, and hosting monthly literary arts functions that highlight the creative contributions of Bay area artists across mediums, Play In The Margins Press currently offers manuscript consultation/editing to poets and essayists, event production/hosting for select collaborations, and will soon re-launch the lauded Eastlake Sessions.
